Closing date: 11 July 2012
Interview date: 26 July 2012

The School of Arts at Oxford Brookes University is seeking to appoint an Early Career Fellow in Opera Studies. This is a fixed-term, two-year appointment. The appointee will undertake research and contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, especially in the field of opera studies. We welcome expertise in all periods and genres of operatic culture, broadly defined, and a diverse range of methodologies and approaches to music theatre. Experts from related fields, e.g. historians and scholars of cultural studies working on opera and music theatre, are equally encouraged to apply.

Music at Brookes is part of the School of Arts. It has a lively research culture in opera studies, identified as world-leading in the last Research Assessment Exercise. The Oxford Brookes Exploring Research Trends in Opera (OBERTO) research unit (http://arts.brookes.ac.uk/oberto/), established in 2011, provides a forum for the investigation of opera in all its interdisciplinary richness, through the organisation of conferences and study days, the hosting of visiting scholars and the dissemination of opera studies to a wider public. The appointee would have the opportunity to develop their career in a supportive and friendly environment working closely alongside established scholars. There is also the potential to establish interdisciplinary links with other colleagues in the School of Arts (Music, Film, Fine Art) and in the Humanities. Oxford, with its first-rate libraries and rich musical culture, offers a superb environment for research in Music, and London is also easily accessible.

Opera features prominently on our undergraduate and postgraduate syllabi. We offer two opera-focused pathways on our MA in Music (http://arts.brookes.ac.uk/music/postgraduate/) and are actively seeking to expand our PhD numbers in this area.

You will be responsible for:

- researching and publishing at a level commensurate with entry in the Brookes submission to the REF
- attracting external funding to support personal research
- teaching and assessing on the Music programme at a variety of levels, with particular reference to opera studies, and supporting students in their studies
- contributing to the activities and administration of the opera research unit (OBERTO)

You should have:

- an active and on-going programme of research appropriate for entry in the Brookes submission to the REF
- the ability to make a contribution to the research culture of the school and in particular the OBERTO opera research unit
- an ability to secure external funding for personal research
- research and teaching expertise in Music with a particular focus in the area of opera studies
- a postgraduate qualification or equivalent in Music or a related discipline, preferably a doctorate
